Where, when and why did the terms left, right and centre come into being regarding politics?

In the 1600's I think, the French made up the terms to show where its head hanchos were on the different probs. Like for ex. In the French Rev. the people on the conservative (left side) were for the monarchy, but the people on the liberal (right side) were for citizens rights.
