I think both come into play, but it sure helps to know people! I moved to a new city in 2005 with a fantastic resume and it took me months to find work. Nepotism is definitely a huge part of how people find jobs, make business connections, gain a reputation, etc.! It's not always fair, but I think it really helps!

I think it's what you know... but that's completely subjective to ones definition of 'success'. (you knew this answer was coming) What is successful? Wealthy? President of a company? Or becoming a parent? Having your kid make it to 18 without a criminal record? Having your marriage last 10, 15, 25 years? If you define success yourself, you will more than likely always achieve it. If you let others define success for you, you will more than likely always fail because there are so many versions, you cannot meet them all. For me, knowledge is power. What I know defines who I am, as well as how I put it to use.

Who you know gets the interview.. What you know gets the job. In the lean business model of most large companys there is no room for nieces and nephews who can't do the job. If you can't cut it, your not gonna get the job. (in my profession anyway)

what you know.

If you know the people, you can get the job. They can always train you to know what is required.

Both make a difference, but in my experience, It has been more who than what.
