According to Noam Chomsky*, there is evidence in the US government archives from the Eisenhower administration where the top foreign policy officials discuss (and record) that the US is supporting repressive regimes in the Middle East in order to guarantee our access to cheap oil. This policy has been the guiding principle of US foreign policy from the mid-1950s through today and has been THE primary source of our troubles in the Middle East and Muslim world. I think the US should apologize for this policy and the massive suffering that has resulted from it. * = I recognize that Chomsky's views of the world are not accepted by many people. However, I don't think he would lie about such at statement of fact given that it could be easily verified or disproved.
