It is an evolutionary advantage. One modern theory about love (which I will use instead of "like on a personal level") is that it leads to more children being born. If there were no such thing as love each male would want to reproduce with the most attractive females in the "pack" (indicating she had the best genes). However, these few women would only be able to have one baby each per year. So a lot of effort and sperm would be wasted! But if males are attracted physically AND on a personal level (ie love could exist) more females would be desirable and hence more children would be born, a clear evolutionary advantage. Put simply, love makes sure everybody can find someone that they want to start a family with and ensures the biological purpose of sexual relations can take place.

This theory may not sound very appealing and a little unpleasant, but it is widely thought to be feasilbe and does make sense.

Feelings, nothing more than feelings, like the song says.

  • I guess for the same reason that, although eating food has a primary survival purpose, we choose to eat only those foods that we enjoy eating . We don't eat just any old thing because we're hungry - humans and other animals exercise the power of choice when deciding what to eat. The basic premise of the question is flawed.

Choosing a sex partner is an even more complex task for humans than it is for other creatures. Like many, including bald eagles, humans have a high propensity to mate for life, or at least a long time, so choosing the 'right' partner has a great impact on our future quality of life; we may not be aware of this natural imperative at all times, but it's there nonetheless. On the other hand, some humans are less choosy than others and we tend to disparage them by applying animal eithets to them - 'He's a dog' 'She's a pig', etc.

At the most base level it's because screwing someone you have feelings for feels better than screwing someone you aren't attracted to and your usually drunk when you dare messing with people you aren't attracted to lol

Copulation for procreation is not the only purpose for the act. Copulation for Recreation is what drives most guys to seek out and find willing females that they like on a personal level.

Children tend to end up with traits of their parents. We don't want to end up with children that we don't like, so I guess that could be why we don't tend to have sex with people that we don't like!
