  • They probably use the word gender because the word sex makes them blush.
  • Sex is about the biological aspect of being XX/XY, and the attributes from that scientific point of view, gender is used in social circumstances to explain what society expects from the sexes in regards to behaviour, appearance, personality, sometimes derived from stereotypes. Ok, maybe they don't use these words properly because they believe them to be synonymous when they are not, not understanding that one means scientifically and the other socially, or they want to make it absolutely clear that they are not referring to the physical copulation meaning of the word "sex".
  • Sex is different to gender. Sex is a strict male / female classification, whereas Gender tends to include things such as self-identification, androgyny, culture, etc. For example, someone's 'sex' might be Male, when their 'Gender' is Female, Androgyny, Neuter, etc. ***** I imagine that people use Gender when they mean Sex because they are unaware of the distinction.
  • Gender tends to relate to what sex you identify with.
  • Because having gender with someone is a much more polite way of having sex.
  • I think it has to do with 'political correctness' in society nowadays. Sex is tied to things that are decidedly NOT PC. So they use gender, thinking it is a better term.
  • I just got this weird image of George Michael singing, "I want your gender"... For some reason it makes sense... :) Anyway, people most likely switch the words around because they don't realize the difference between the two. It's simple ignorance, and not necessarily in a bad way. Maybe they just never knew there WAS a difference.
