Because they are unhappy themselves, and sometimes it kills someone to see other people happy when they themselves are not. Its like the spoiled girl who has everything, but is still unhappy because someone else has something she doesnt.

Especially single children tend to be more competitive around their friends and general acquaintances because they most often were given all the attention and love by the family. So when that reinforcement is taken away from their everyday life and the attention goes to someone else it makes them feel worth less.

Selfishness and Jealousy prevent them to see other people's success.
