In relation to cakes that are ordered from a business- do they have the legal right to create characters from a licensed company- for example a movie/movie series? Do they have to get permission to make this cake legally?

Any image that is in a likeness of a copyrighted image is copyrighted on anything and anywhere, even a cake. So a Disney character on a cake can only be placed on there if they have permission. I've seen cake PANS that are in certain shapes and the buying of the pan gives you the permission. But to design it yourself or do it in frosting is a violation of copyright.
