You should include the next verse in this: "And came out of the graves after his resurrection, and went into the holy city, and appeared unto many." Matt. 27:53 These were the first people to be resurrected after Jesus' resurrection. So, no, they did not go back to their graves. Jesus went to a lot of trouble to prove that He had a physical body after His resurrection. He told his apostles to handle Him and He ate food with them. After doing this, no where in the Bible does it say that He laid His body down again. So, He still has it. Likewise the saints that rose from their graves immediately after his resurrection are also still alive. As it says in the Bible they appeared unto many in the Jerusalem to prove the reality of the resurrection. They, like the Savior, then ascended to heaven where they now live in the presence of the Father.

When we look at this carefully we should see that when he made this comment or statement this is very important look at verse 58-60 Jesus had not even been laid in the tomb yet! With this not being taken into account it is easy then to blieve that the saints arose from their graves and appeared to many. He was not even buried yet. Jesus arose from the grave in chpt 28:2. So why did Matthew say this? Why did God allow this to be put in the bible? To show that no one is exempt from fabercating, in the heat of a moment, or in the climax of excitement we as humans have tendence to add a little extra to the story. Matthew is not exempt.

Good question. You'd think that a whole bunch of dead saints getting out of their graves and going shopping at the mall would inspire some of the people of the time to make a note in their diary or something.
