  • Think about opening a small business like a gym.
  • Open a martial arts studio in a wealthy neighborhood.
  • Yeah, the only thing I can think of is starting your own dojo, but being only 16, I'm thinking that you'll have to save up a lot of money, formulate a strong business plan, understand all of the financing and learn how to work with loans, and apply for a starting small business loan at a bank that knows you/your family well.
  • There are at least four martial arts jobs that will sustain a family: 1) train to become a 3rd degree black belt and open a dojo 2) work in movies (be good enough) 3) become a body guard 4) start a body guard school
  • I have been teaching a mix of self defense and health science, from my home, since 1977. Running a business from your home allows you to deduct half of the home's operating expense as a tax deduction business expense ... half rent or mortgage, half phone bill, half power bill, etc. ... click my avatar and read my profile ... I have also been adding numerous other things to what I do ... I work temporary part time seasonal as security at large events like the F-1, Indy, and Nascar races - three weekends per year ... I write software at my leisure and sell it when it is finished ... I occassionaly take small contracts and odd jobs. You could start your own school business, teach part time, and get another part time job.

  • Learn to navigate the bureaucratic system of your country & state. Several years ago I had a ordinary job and I trained 4-6 classes a week. I wanted to train more so I looked at what was possible. My Sifu also ran a gym as part of the martial arts centre. Timing wise I was preparing ofr my black belt grading. I quit my job for 3 months which made me eligible for a government subsidised training program. I arranged a fitness instructor traineeship through Sifus gym. The government subsidised 75% of my salary (Sifu liked that idea a lot). This let me train more or less full time I was there 7:00am-9:00pm (I arranged my hours to do the shifts other staff disliked, locking up at night etc). Best of all it also meant free tuition, so I was spending less anyway. That was five or so years ago, these days I teach just over half the classes at the same place. Right now I’m upgrading my qualifications to sports coaching to teach an after school sports program in martial arts.
