The word "Robot" was first introduced to the English language by the writer Karl Capek in his 1921 play "R.U.R." (which stood for "Rossum's Universal Robots"). In the play the robots were souless automatons that were made up of "other material" that were cooked up in vats. Over the years since, the term robot has come to mean machines of a mechanical (and electronic) nature. SF authors such as Asimov and Del Rey have made them more intelligent and human-like. Somewhere in the eighties there was a shift in terminology and robot became a term the could be used for any kind of semi-intelligent machine. So a self-aware human-like device could be a robot, but so could a huge gripping arm used to assemble automobiles in a factory assembly line. Currently in the 21st century if you talk about a "robot" you are talking about any semi-intelligent mechanical and electronic machine and looking like a human is not necessary. If you want your "robot" to look like a human then you're talking about; Robot - Mechanical/Electronic artificial person. Android (or shortened to 'Droid) - Which is an biological artificially created person (think the bad guy in "Alien"). Cyborg (or shortened to 'Borg) - can be either a human brain in a metal body or a robot brain in a human body (think the Borg from "Star Trek" or the Terminator from "The Terminator" and it's sequels) or any combination of mechanical/electronic and flesh. "The Six-Million Dollar Man" and "The Bionic Woman" were also Cyborgs. Hope this helps.
