I can tell you this much - my husband of blessed memory worked for the phone company for much of his life. 867-5309 was never an available number because of this song. They didn't want the unfortunate recipient to be pestered by people trying to reach Jenny.

867 was a real prefix outside Fallon, Nevada and years ago a person obtained that phone # years after the song came out and he would keep getting calls so the phone company gave him a separate line to his house and he put the 867 number on an answer machine.

The song writers made up the #. There are many areas that have 867 as a prefix and those #'s were constantly called when the song came out. Some radio stations made a joke out of it dialing different area codes and then asking for Jenny.
