(US Political question) If a person serves honorably in the military, and is a "liberal"/"democrat" do conservatives consider that person good (for having served) or bad (for being a "liberal/dem")?

There are many different kind of conservatives. Are you talking social conservatives? Fiscal conservatives? Crazy-Jesus conservatives? Gotta be specific.

The military is one of the most conservative organizations extant. Conservative in the sense that it tends to hang on to its traditions and practices for a long time and is slow to change. Also conservative in the sense that the military is organized along hierarchical top-down undemocratic authority structures (the "chain of command"). Note that neither of the above is either surprising or negative. In fact, most of the problems of the Iraq invasion can be attributed to a lack of respect for military conservatism on the part of the Bush administration. The inherent conservatism of the military culture tends to attract people with conservative world views. As such, they tend to view people with liberal political philosophies with distrust. There are plenty of democrats in the military. I get a kick out of the fact that people seem to think we all have the same opinions. My platoon was split 50/50 during the U.S. elections when we were in Iraq. The military is a very diverse group of people. A 22 year-old single female generally has different views than a 45 year-old married father of three. Both were in my squad, though.

i have as a general rule been treated just the opposite-when a conservative found out i served all of a sudden i am not so bad-they might disagree with me but never put me down---cool question have some points-smile and enjoy the day

If anyone serves in the military I don't see the point of focusing on the individuals political philosophy. I think the fact that they serve makes them good Americans first and foremost. If your in a battle with an enemy, are you really going to follow the guy in your unit that shares your political point of view. Or join together as a single unit to defeat that foe. Just off the top of my head. Semper Fi

I respect those that have served or are serving.I dont believe labels do justice for what is being fought for.Lives are being risked to protect Me in this case.They are good no matter what label is placed on them.Liberal or Conservative.

I'm a liberal veteran and get crap from some that know I'm a veteran for my views all the time. It's amusing.
