I have 4 cats. They purr around each other. They purr around us. We have video recordings of them when we're not around.

Purring is apparently a cat's way of requesting attention. Mother cats do it to apparently calm their kittens, and kittens do it while nursing. But even a severely injured cat will sometimes purr, and vets have heard cats purr right up to the moment of death. In fact, I saw it happen to one of our cats, years ago, who got hit by a car. The theory is that this is a desparate plea for attention, although there's no definitive proof of that.

Cats do purr around each other, but this is mostly a form of commmunication as well as mewing at each other or hissing as a warning to back off. I had 2 cats at one point and i noticed that when they were cuddling (they were brothers) they purred at each other, my grandma also had about like 10 cats at her farm and they communicated with each other mosly by purring.

intuitivly i have felt that my cats have purred when they were happy or content.. its true that it can also seem like a mechanism to cope with outside fears and also a form of communication and/or plea.

Scientists at the Fauna Communications Research Institute in North Carolina have discovered that purring is a 'natural healing mechanism'. Wounded cats will purr because it helps to heal and strengthen bones and organs. Cats purr at between 27 and 44 hertz (a measure of the number of cycles per second), exposure to similar sound frequencies is known to improve bone density in humans. Purring is believed to have a similar effect to ultra-sound treatment on humans. Here's an interesting article about some of the research about purring and healing. http://www.bksv.com/2798.asp
