Usually just when you return to or are entering a country. You go through the separate channels . You do not normally go through customs on the way out of a country Customs is a different thing to passport control. Customs is a check on your baggage. Passport control is a check on the person. Your baggage is checked in and you will be asked if you are carrying certain items when you are about to travel by air. If they think it necessary they could check your baggage. In this day and age it is a very good thing the extra security.

You will leave the USA with no checks but upon arrival before setting foot on foreign soil outside the customs area of the airport, you will have to clear both immigration and customs. Upon return to the USA, depending on your departure country, you may have to go thru immigration again and then upon arrival at the 1st USA airport, you will be sent to both immigration and customs before being able to leave the airport.
