Get support from other people. When your friends or family hold you accountable, it can be really helpful in breaking any addiction.

Try nicotine patches / gum, and try to substitute the shape of the cigarette for something else; they are the two things people get addicted to. Nicotine is the obvious one, but some people don't realise that they can become addicted to the 'act' of smoking rather than the effects or whatever - it's well documented that some people just need to hold something 'like' a cigarette and suck on it every now and then (just like a cigarette). ***** Seriously, nicotine patches / gum are some of the most effective methods to help quitting! : ) It's also very useful to try and get everyone close to you to be supportive and help keep you off them. I really hope you manage to quit soon! : )

G'day posterwreck21, Thank you for your question. I would speak with your doctor about how to develop a program to quit smoking that works for you. You may want to try reducing your smoking over a few months before quitting altogether. I have attached sources on how to quit smoking. You've only been smoking 3 years. Give in to it for now and decide to quit before 30. Besides, you probably have the addiction genes, judging by the information found on your answerbag home page, so it'll be impossibly hard for you to quit once hooked. If you can't stop, start enjoying it more. Embrace it and you will have peace. Convert others if you feel they are wanting and you will have more smoker friends. I've been there and know now. One thing, though, that has worked for many your age, believe it or not, especially if you used to do it, is thumb sucking. At the very least it can and has worked as a very viable substitute and is mentioned elsewhere on the Internet. Once you do this plan on continueing for 6 months or so and, at that point, if you chose, you can stop sucking your thumb especially since it's a LOT easier to do than to stop smoking. It's totally free, available, legal, doesn't require any outside aid, is effective, etc. Good luck either way.

I suggest hypnosis but only if you really REALLY have a desire to stop smoking. It worked for me 16 years ago and I had been smoking for more than twice as long as you have been on earth. Ask your doctor about qualified hypnotists in your area, or search the internet for "Prophet Seminars" which is the one I attended. Good luck!!

This is a good time to ask a trusted friend or parent or both for positive help and encouragement. Almost no "method" works without real and loving help.

im 21 years old now, iv been smoking since i was 11 or 12 so thats around 10 years now. i decided to quit smoking several times over the years, i reached once 2 months with out smoking . but being my friend smoke my parents smoke, it gives you a pleant feeling that you dont.. but that didnt last for long i am a weak person persay .. so now at my age i have learnt about tobaco so suddnly decided to switch to cigars for sevarel reasons. 1-they give you the nicotine you need 2- i dont inhale, it keeps my lungs clean. 3- i acctually enjoy the feeling the taste and the act of it. 4- if i do it to much it isnt pleasnt any more so it is self limiting. i would advice you to quit smoking , but i would first try to smoke two cigaretts any time after 6 pm. this would give you the pleasnt sinsation, and sooth your carving. p.s try not to inhale to much. nicotene is collected through all the tissue in your body, not only tissue in your lungs.
