Its complicated. There are some eating disorders that are clearly affected by the media and society, yet there are others like binge eating that seem to go against the grain. There is a school of thought that eating disorders are caused by a variety of problems and that society and media only exacerbate these. http://eatingdisordersonline.com/explain/bed.php

The media is to blame for enforcing a beauty ideal that is unreal, by faking and retouching material. Some eating disorders stem from the pressure this creates in society. I seriously wonder if high-resolution TV will change this to some degree. I've seen live HD material that was too detailed to be tasteful. Not even talking to someone in real lets me see that kind of detail about their skin condition, and maybe makeup does have its limits, too.

No, not to blame, eating disorders have been around for centuries. however, they do reinforce a poor self/body image and encourage the spread of the problem. the media is a lot like the pack of kids that surround a fight egging the combatants on. they didn't start the fight but they are throwing fuel on the fire.
