To the best of my knowledge there is no mention in the HQ of dogs being najis. This ruling is there in books of ritual cleanliness and is most probably based on Hadith. I think there is agreement that it's not the whole body of the dog but the nose and saliva that is najis. I also think that most scholars would recommend that dogs should be kept for a purpose, guide, hunting, guarding etc and not as pets to move about freely in the house.
