Yes, you can make a living playing rugby, but the main thing is what level you will play it at. You might not earn enough to live off even if you don’t play for a top flight club if. Like anything if you are the top of your game you will get paid enough. If you play for a Wasps or Quins you can make a living because of the training evolved, that is your main job. My friend plays for London Irish and works in a PC shop part time to earn the extra money. In sport where you make your most money is by sponsorship, e.g. Stewart Abbot is sponsored by Abbot Ale, Jonnie Wilkinson amongst other things is by Hackett and bare in mind Wilkinson isn’t playing well. Hope this helps. HawkUK.

ofcourse you can make a living just by playing rugby, rugby union players get a few thousand dollars more than rugby league players, then you have rugby sevens players who make a few thousand dollars less than legue players.butin less than two years you'll be a millionare.you get more money if you'r playing 'A' grade than 'B' grade....(their are 4 grades,i think)just recently,an australian winger, wanted to switch codes to rugby legue(he was originally playing legue when he switched to union,he now wants to return to legue)he was an excellent player which is why the australian rugby union didnt want him to leave and offered him a contract close to $1,000,000 per season,if he eccepted that contract hewould have been the highest payed rugby player in the world,so you see,you can make a living just by playing rugby, and i have a dream of doing that,i play in the 'B'grade for my university team, hopping to be an 'A'grade player next year.(the contracts i have spoken about and there worth are for tier 1 countrys,i dont know what they are like in the U.S and canada)

If you're good. This is how you can do it is you're American. If you play on the USA national team you could easily get a try out on a professional club in Europe (France, England, Scotland, Whales, Italy, and Ireland.), the Southern Hemisphere (South Africa, Australia, and New Zealand.), or Japan. The other way is if you're an American is to go play for a lower level club in Europe, Southern Hemisphere, or Japan excel and move up the ranks and divisions. Or go to a rugby school in Europe, Australia, or New Zealand. But both these process would take at least 2 to 3 years. How do you make the USA national team is simple process while you’re playing overseas tell USA Rugby that you play for a respected club and tell them which one. Then they will invite you to a try out with the USA National team. Another way to make the USA National team is to play in the U.S. Super League that is made up of the best D 1 clubs in the USA, excel then be asked to come to a USA Rugby training camp. If you don’t live anywhere near a super league team play for your local club every major U.S. city has one. Then go try out for your regional team examples are the all South Team, and all Pacific Coast team. Then go to the annual USA Rugby Tournament of regional teams there will be USA Rugby Scouts at the tournament. Don't worry about the availability of a spot on the USA team, because there is plenty of room on the U.S. roster that constantly changes of 50 or more rugby players. Remember that Rugby in the USA is an amateur sport if you are athletic, committed, and know your rugby fundamentals well you can pursue any of the above options.
