My dad had a similar problem with his Jeep. He had to replace it's belt

The problem is most likely a fan belt. The additional drain of voltage to run the air conditioner, which is tied in with the heater is causing the belt to slip on the altinator, which is trying to meet the demand needed.

It is probably the fan belt. But i had to get the cambelt re-alined because it was squealing when i accellerated. but this had nothing to do with the air-con.

Take your car to any garage and ask them to retension or replace the fan-belt which you will find under the hood.
