Actually it is from corn which is a grain and not a vegetable. But once popped it becomes a snack since most people eat it as such and not as a main meal or a side dish grain or veggie:-)

are there vege rules? who gets to be a veggie and who get to be a grain...and why didn't I learn this in school....out to lunch, I guess.

What is regular corn, sweet corn, etc. I think pop corn should be classified the same, Vegetable.

The reason popcorn is not a vegetable is because it under goes through a bunch of chemical changes, Which is no longer a corn. The popcorn has nutrients and moisture inside the kernel. When the mositure inside gets heated to a high heat, the mositure inside turns into a steam. The pressure from the steam causes the kernel to explode and turns the kernel inside out. Which loses mosts of it's nutrients. As you can see from the nutrition label. Bottom line, after it is popped, there is not enough nutrients to make it count for a vegetable.

I would be inclined to say yes, since it's from corn.

It's because it is popped and undergoes many chemical changes. Still, in terms of snack foods, it's one of the healthier ones available. It has a surprisingly high amount of fiber and not that many calories, as long as it's butter-free.
