I would tell the person who owns the car. I would also ask the officer why the vehicle was not towed on the spot. If it has no valid tags then it's illegal to have on the road.

You don't want to just ignore it if it was in your name. The best solution would be if the owner has gotten it's registration fixed and you carry that to court. They should simply dismiss your ticket, saying you complied. Otherwise you may need a lawyer, you most likely don't have the experience or knowledge to fight the ticket yourself.

The driver is responsible for everything surrrounding the use of an automobile. this includes any activity inside the auto as well as all lights and yes, license plates on the outside. Go to court and take the owner of the vehicle and explain to the court this situation. Somebody will pay the price.
