My mother in law does that all the time. She is in her late 80's now so we buy her gift cards because she is in a retirement home. This year we told her we would take her shopping instead.
Where I live, they made it so that gift cards are always good no matter when you decide to use them. Of course all the gift cards made before that certain day are an exception to the rule. I'm pretty sure I learned that in class, anyway. I probably have done that before as I have never used a gift card. but I'm pretty sure I've received one. :)
No. I had a Sears gift card for over a year. It kept it's whole value.
