Welcome to the world of obsolescence. Sometimes people ask, "when is a good time to get a newer computer?" This is a good example of that time. Sure, you might be able to patch around the problem by going to Windows 2000, but problems like these are just going to keep rearing their ugly heads. What you'll pay to get 2000 will almost pay 25% of a new, budget model PC. In my experience, it's not worth it to start the band aid solution at this point. If your mom is using Windows Me, she's also likely suffering from USB 1.0 and a host of other performance bottlenecks. Not to mention that security updates for Me are no longer available (or this will be the case soon), which means that with each passing moment, her PC becomes susceptible to more and more un-patched vulnerabilities.

There is no "easy" upgrade for this. If you can afford it, it sounds like it is time to upgrade to a new computer.
