Oh, aboslutely. All my pets (two dogs, four cats in my lifetiome) have come from shelters. Maybe they're grateful for being rescued because they make wonderful pets. It hurts me to know there are so many unwanted dogs, cats, puppies and kittens in our world today. If your animals are not spayed or neutered, please do it ASAP. Spayed/neutered animals are healthier, too.

To a degree. I think it depends on what you want to do with the animals. It works for pets and a few jobs but many times you want or need a specific breed or need to improve certain qualities. Like if you need a dog for sheep herding or guarding, I'm not going to use a dog from a shelter. I will get the best quality sheep dog I can afford. If I want a rescue dog for the water I will get a Newfoundland or a Portuguese water dog. If I want to hunt game or need a retriever, I'm getting one from a reliable breeder. Some breeds are better for certain jobs. I don't believe anyone should breed anything, dog or horse or cta or rabbit unless it is an exceptional example of it's breed and it should be bred UP and planned for very carefully. But with cats, since I left my childhood behind, I spay and neuter everything in sight. I only get cats from rescue or from people who should have known better. And until just two weeks ago, we've always gotten older cats and not adorable kittens. And our newest members came as a package deal. We got MOM and one baby.
