  • It takes planning, and various strategies. You don't want to have to count on any one single source of income. Ideally, you would have investments (stocks, 401K plans, etc.), retirement income from your profession, and savings. You also want to make sure that you keep yourself out of debt.
  • Save earnestly your entire working life. Take advantage of any savings or matching program your employer offers. Live below your means at all times, and save the excess. Keep your savings in sensible, safe investments, rather than going for the risky money. Put money aside for your retirement first, before buying unnecessary items. Always keep your long term goals in mind.
  • You basically have to set your post retirement income at about 70% of your pre retirement income...I have that but I also have a lot of equity in my home etc, and I plan on dying broke...and maybe in severe debt if I outlive my s/o.
  • I agree with all of the above answers; it's a tough, long process that requires planning beginning when you are like 12 (ASAP in other words). I have heard that a ROTH IRA is the best place to start (it has limits but an impressive return as I am told) then open a regular IRA and investing in CD's (not the musical kind ;) they say they are going the way of the 8 track). Of course, investigate these options with an expert; this is just what I have been told in seminars at work.
  • I am a retired septuagenarian. I reduced my wants to the minimum. I try to Lead a healthy life. I Spend my time with my little grand children.I took up a hobby which has no connection with my job prior to retirement. Now, I spend more time with my computer and children. I just find each day is a new day and "life is beautiful", which is what we missed running after money, name and fame.
