When young Bruce took upon himself to fight crime a bat flew past his window (or in some versions of his origin, through it) and being criminals are a "cowardly and superstitious lot" he took the guise of a bat to strike fear in their hearts.

a bat was present at every major point in his life: the first time he felt true fear, it was caused by a bat in a cave; on his travels (when he was training to protect Gotham), he came across a tribe that worshipped bats; when he returned, a bat crashed through his study window (NOTE: Bruce Wayne considers/considered that study to be his father's). You could also point out that Shiva gave him the mask of a bat god (Tengu) after Bane broke his back, but this was because she was aware of who he was (or had been, from Bruce and Shiva's standpoint). This was not a coincidence,--she knew he was the Batman, and gave him that mask because he wasn't "worthy" of the Batsuit.
