  • Many rural communities have volunteer fire departments. Where I live, on an island, we have 4 townships and each has its own fire department. Thevolunteers are intensely trained and have to reach a provincial standard...they are tested and on-going training is mandatory. The equipment has to reach standards too. The difference here is, of course, these firefighters (men and women) may have other jobs. They certainly don't sit around a firehall all day in case there is a fire. They all carry pagers, when on call, and have an arrangement with their employer that when that buzzer goes, they drop everything and GO. Sometimes they drive directly to the location of the fire and the truck comes directly bringing gear. Sometimes they go to the firehall first and go together in the trucks. They are wonderful, brave people..who do this as a service to their community!
