G'day Mentalmum, Thank you for your question. We will be having a seafood Christmas dinner consisting of prawns and oysters. As it is in Australia, it could well be boiling hot. We will also be having the main meal next Saturday so my brothers families can spend Christmas with their inlaws. My Dad and I will be having a Christmas lunch. Regards

Normally we had a ham dinner for New Year's Day.
-
We have cabbage and black-eyed peas. I hate that but it's our tradition. It's supposed to bring you luck and wealth.
-
We usually have cold cuts, veggies and dip, and fruit. And then because my husband's family was from the South, we have black-eyed peas for luck.
-
we dont normally mum....anything goes really, but I think looking at your menu we will be round your house, what time do you want us? ;0
-
Pork-sauerkraut-mashed potatos and rye bread.
-
Ahhh ok .. well we had turkey dinner on Xmas and the ham dinner on New Years.
-
We usually make too many party snacks for New Year's Eve, so we eat left over party snacks. That's why I usually make little ham turnovers, and serve lots of fruits and vegetables.
-
u.s.a. being the greatest cosmopolitan nation in the world it's hard to pinpoint a traditional meal anymore. one thing for sure is food is always in abundance. p.s.did you try making the ginger beer?
-
crackers...and bread...
-
I genuinely want to know what "steak pie" is... I like steak and I like pie and this sounds like the best of both :)
-
New Years Day dinner for me now is always food that doesn't require effort, nor is loud when you eat it because I'm probably still hung over. Growing up my mom always made a ham with tons of side dishes. I order a pizza.
-
Black eyed peas..which I don't like but are tolerable if you 'doctor' them up enough Cabbage Cornbread the traditional New Year's meal is supposed to include hog head..I refuse My aunt made New Year's dinner one year and I was face to face with the hog head, it gave me nightmares. I couldn't eat a bite of anything.
-
My mom makes her lasagna. Not so much traditional, but we look forward to it as she only makes it twice a year :O) Mmmmm!
-
Do you have a recipe for that steak pie?
-
We normally have roast pork with lovely crispy crackling. In fact substitute pork for turkey and it's pretty much the same as Christmas Dinner. I don't know what it will be this year, though, because we won't be at home for New Year's Eve and New Year's Day - we're having quite a hectic round of party-going this year - OK, we always have quite a hectic round of party-going at Christmas-time, it's just that none of the parties are at our house for a change.
-
Not really. Most people sleep in because of late night parties, then pick on leftovers. It is usually very hot in Sydney, and no one wants to cook.
-
MentalMum, I need a good recipe for "Scots Broth". A real one, not the kind Cambell's Soup has. I know it has to be better than that!
-
I would love to ring in the New Year in Scotland! As for a traditional meal, I don't believe my family has ever had one. We had ham on Christmas, but I think my mother would cook something simple for New Years.
-
Polish tradition dictates that you eat sauerkraut on New Years Day, for good luck in the new year. However, I hate sauerkraut, so...I don't go along with that, lol. It hasn't hurt me so far!

We have what my family has always referred to as a 'fisherman's New Year'. We make a shrimp, or crawfish boil with potatoes and corn on the cob. We just pile it into bowls and everyone helps themselves. My grandfather always said that if you bring in the new year with your friends and family all fed and happy, then the fishing would be good that year. It was all about the fishin', ya know!

Steak pie sounds really good .
-
what ever i am having black eye peas is a must
-
in the south ( of usa) we have hoppin john, black eyed pees and rice, for good luck. ( not my favorite!).
-
I don't think traditional Americans have a special dinner on New Year's Day. At least I haven't met any that do. Wish we did.
