And what makes it blasphemous? A child's mother is the first "supreme being" that a child encounters. It is to mother that the child turns for sustenance, warmth and protection. There is an instinctive "knowing" that it is mother from whom one's life has sprung. In an anthropological sense, I think this is also why the first deities were mother goddesses. We still find those echoes of mother worship in the most patriarchal of religions. Most often covered up, but still recognizable to many. There are even many progressive Christians today who view God as both father and Mother. I don't think the statement is blasphemous. I think it's a poetic rendering of a profound human "truth."

I have no real thoughts about it but probably would agree that the mother of a child is god-like in that she supplies it's every need!
-
it's a sentimental quote, that's all. I wouldn't give it a great deal of importance. Like something out of a greeting card.
-
I think the quote implies that a mother has the power and the responsability to shape her child in the best way she can.
-
Well, I guess that depends on your religion and interpretation of the quote. I worship the Mother Goddess, so it cannot possibly be blasphemous for me. Interpreting it to mean your literal mother, I still don't find it blasphemous, because I believe in immanent divinity. I think it has a very real truth to it. Those who have a strongly patriarchal, transcendent view of Deity could very well find it blasphemous.

I think this is a beautiful quote i have it tatted on my back

Well, if it means that children regard their mother as their god, I think it's perhaps vaguely blasphemous, but also probably largely true, as children's hearts are as idolatrous as the rest of us, aside from the heart being changed. As it regards to God being female instead of male... I think it's absurd to regard God as gender at all. God is a spirit, not a human.

The quote originally came from William Makepeace Thackeray, an Indian born English novelist that died in 1863. I also fell in love with the Eric Draven character in The Crow,as well as the cult movie itself. The quote was well placed in the movie for the meaning it was intended. The interpretation of the quote would depend on each individual reader. Some are offended easily, some not. No matter where you are in the world, you will offend someone at some time. Aesop's fables taught us that "please all, and you will please none." So I myself am pleased with the quote in the movie and believe in the power of that quote. Again, you can please some people some of the time, but can't please everyone all the time. So keep your chin up because... ...it can't rain all the time.

Its what comes with the package. Mother & Earthly Father both are given a gift from The Holy God. To raise up the child in a God-Like figure. Meaning they are to teach their children according to The Holy Father's Word. And by doing this the truth of who the Holy Father is. Shall be realized by the children as the become of age of accountability...........Just my point of view tho...........M.C.S.

Twenty bucks says that the person who told you that didn't understand the quote. Anything them Christians don't understand is labeled as offensive

Everyone, if you read one comment please read this one. You are misinterpreting the meaning of the quote and the content. "Mother is the name for God". This does not mean that Mother is God. If you are a believer of a God you believe that a God is the spirit which looks over a subject (People, Love, Water, Earth, Etc). Even gods which were considering gods of death (i.e. Anubis, Hades) still over saw certain subjects to make sure one purpose was upheld. So "Mother is the name of God". A mother is defined as a women which births a child. Therefore our mother is not our god but our mother is the one who looks over us.

I think that the person who makes all your 'boo-boos' better is definitely 'god like' in the eyes of a child. The bible says, (in Proverbs). "the taking of offense is what rests in the bosom of the stupid one". (If you'd like the chapter and verse let me know. But right now the lights are out and the kids are asleep.) I'd say that applies to whomever concluded that the line was 'blasphemous'.

It came from the book Vanity Fair, and borrowed by The Crow. I don't think it is blasphemous at all. Children, especially the young ones don't know who God is. The first person they think of, they see, the feel need for is Mother. The quote is merely a statement of fact, of a child's viewpoint. I think blasphemy is a statement that intends to insult God, and since he made mothers and children, then he should not take insult. He is "all knowing, all seeing" he should be able to tell what is meant by this.

I feel that the people who take religion too seriously would think that this quote is blasphemous. I thought this was a beautiful quote by Eric Draven (Brandon Lee)from 'The Crow, The Stairway to Heaven'. "I" like to think for myself and not distort my reasoning with too many external sources which might misdirect my judgement. Mother in the aspect of the nurturer and protector is more along the line of what I felt this quote meant to convey to its audience. God the omnipresent force that sustains all of creation gave us a 'Mother' for that purpose. When we regard the quote in this manner, it becomes less inflammatory.

as a christian ,i disagree, our children know HIM as their Heavenly Father and they have their earthly father.. they are taught, the Heavenly Father disciplines ,the same as theirs should..HE demands obediance, they same as their should.. blasphemy is "denying identity and power" ..which is forgiveable.. so, i guess using the true sense of the word, it is... Jesus said the unforgiveable was blasphemy of the Holy Ghost(GOD) ,in pther words, denying that the Holy Spirit was GOD and HIS POWER....justme:)

In Proverbs the spirit of Wisdom says we should call her mother. God has always been The Father. Personally, I don't feel comfortable calling Wisdom " mother "; but gladly call God my Father.
-
"Mother' is the name for God on the lips and hearts of all children" I agree with that quote. Mother & father is the God & Goddess whom every man can see by his own eyes. since the day when you see the light of the day until whenever they leave you forever, their Love will remain same WITHOUT ANY CHANGE. we ought to do our duties until they are with us, Their blessings will be an invisible power behind you forever in every good work you do. "Mother & Father, the living god & goddess"

Old post, I know, but still: 'Mother'... When a child hears this title they think of the one person they look up to more then any other... The one that when she says something, her words overrule anyone elses. 'Mother' IS the name of 'God' to every child whether they love their mother or have felt pain from her... It is the nature of things. Noones name or title or rank will ever be higher then 'Mother' no matter what they try.
