Sadly they aren't all that effective. Influenza is a virus so there are millions of strains that can cause the same symptoms. Flu shots are made up of more common strains. They can be helpful, but if you run across one of the millions of strains not injected into your body, the shot won't work at all and you will have yourself a nasty case of the flu.
