Listen, be there and hold them if/when they cry. Words themselves are the least important thing right now. Feeling the presence and concern of other human beings is critical.

Either way they probably would have died. I dunno. I guess -- let them know it's not their fault. Which it probably isn't.

Just keep reassuring the person that it was not their fault.
