Do you work on saturday or sunday? if not, you could always use the excuse that because you got the email on saturday you just skimmed it. You may as well confess and apologies profusely to your boss (who was probably waiting for you for ages). If he wants to fire you and you werent supposed to be working at the weekend, then maybe you'd be better off. There is such a thing as work, life balance; and people are entitled to not be contacted by work on their days off. (unless they are a doctor or something) If you are supposed to be working on sat or sun (and therefore should have read the email) then you might be in the s**t. Either way, say you are sorry and mean it. And read all emails in future, however boring or long they may be. Ciao

Well of course none of us know whether you'll be getting fired or not. As painful as this episode might be, I think of these incidents as being "life education". The most important school there is is the school of difficult experiences, and one of the most important lessons life has to offer is "pay attention to details". So often these lessons show up in our curriculum, and we ignore them. If the pain of this event does nothing more than succeed in helping you to learn this principle, the discomfort will be well worth it. Hopefully you'll be able to convince them to keep you, but if not, by all means memorize that lesson.

If it was that important for you to meet him in NYC, why didn't he call you? Does your job require you to read your emails every day? If not just tell him or her that you were busy with family that came in for the hollidays. In this day & age of internet & cell phones I personally think some things still should be attended to by phone or in person & if its an important business meeting they should call you to verify your presence. But thats my opinion.

Well no I do not work on the weekends and I looked he knows I looked at the email because I responded to another email he sent a couple of minutes later. Also he did not call me, all he did was send me this huge email saying that he wants to start doing 30-60 minute meetings in the office every monday, which is not in the city. That is when I stopped reading the email, I was on outlook web and the page stopped perfectly at the last sentence of the paragraph and I did not think to scroll down to look at the rest of the email.
