A beautiful person is a single person. The beautiful people are a group of people that collectively are beautiful!

I thought 'the beautiful people' was a reference to celebrities, the rich and famous, children of the rich and famous etc, generally the ones who had alot of free time on their hands with which to mingle, party, travel to exotic locations etc (or they might work hard plus party hard).
