I'm sure that many Muslims have wondered about this. I'm also sure that many Christians have wondered the same thing about various elements of their faith. It's the thinking person's dilemma in regard to religion and spirituality. Even so spiritually-identified a person as Mother Teresa has experienced this. In her case for 50 years. St. John of the Cross, who went through this, actually coined the well-known phrase, "Dark Night of the Soul" in regard to this phenomenon. St, Therese of Lisieux and St. Paul of the Cross both wrote of experiencing this. Now, I notice that you mention "fighting for nothing at all." In that case, I assume that you're referring to Islamist fundamentalists since they're the segment of Muslim culture that are engaged in the "fighting" that I think you're referring to. Mainstream Muslims are not. Fundamentalists of any stripe probably don't bother themselves with such questions. Too disturbing to their comfortable little world-view. Neither do fundamentalist Christianists for that matter. So, I guess the answer to your question is: If you're referring to fundamentalist Muslims, as you should be when speaking of "fighting," then no, I doubt it ever occurs to them at all.

Islam defines faith briefly as belief in God and his angels, his revealed teachings(books)his divine messengers, and the last day for all mankind as wells as the destiny whethery favorable or unfavorable. To be a muslim you had to first accept the following: That there is only one God (Allah) and that Muhammad is his servent and messenger. Therefore based upon what I have said above a true muslim will never wonder if the the prophet was not really a prophet. There have been some muslims who converted to other religions but not very many historically. The believer must find within his or her own soul a confirmation of his faith beyond doubt and that is when the believer is truely a believer and not simply a blind follower of a traditon. Muslim lands had been dominated by mostly Christian and nowadays Jewish westerners for centuries and the only reason why they were able to resist the westerners and eventually get independence from them was their unified belief in the Prophet muhammad and the Quran. It is noteworthy that in other traditionally non muslim lands conversion to Islam was sometimes voluntary(Not based on miliatary or financial influences) based upon admiration of the wisdom, strength and unity of muslims and their lack of fear of western forces. Indonesia, the Phillipines and Malaysia were some examples of this and other parts of Asia and Africa also espcially in China. Present muslims are fighting somtimes because they feel they have no choice such as in Palestine and believe me even in Puerto Rico there are political prisoners who faught against the USA as in the modern world no one wants to be occupied by another for any reason. Then there those like in Iraq who also felt compelled to fight against the USA as an invading force even if they were happy about Saddam Hussain going (Like the Shiya)and others. Later they might have seen it differently but the basic issue is economics so the majority of muslim countries in the world even if poor with unemployment are not enemies of the west and do not have fighting against anyone and in fact a military general in a muslim country might have spent all his life never being in a war accept maybe a war of independence or a gulf war at the request of former President Bush while on the contrary in the west military service almost demands that you be in a conflict usually abroad. Finally there are those muslims who fight each other for religious and cultural or political reasons usually somehow manipulated by the west and some who fight and even oppress others of other religions. All of them, and all of us will be rewarded a just reward by God for our actions whether that reward is something favorable or severe punishment remains to be known at judgement.

And has anyone else besides me ever wondered that maybe the Muslims and the Christians are actually worshipping the same great spiritual force...and that Muhammed and Jesus might actually have been messengers from this Sprit? And that MEN, as in HUMAN, have over the eons, written rules of worship which suit their own purposes and reflect the culture and mores of their time....and that now it looks like we are so far apart...but that really we are on parallel paths of worship!

Have Christians ever wondered that their claims of Jesus and god and everything else may be false and delusional and that they are fighting for nothing after all? Still, that hasn't stopped them...
