Are Mormon men discouraged from getting into relationships before they leave on their missions?

As a general practise? Yes. As a specific rule? No. Missionaries, male and female, are expected to devote all their time, talents and energy to God. The less distractions they have, including a girlfriend or boyfriend, the more focused and dedicated they will be.

Well, it is true that the less distractions the better, but the void of leaving the world is much more disturbing and the stress is much more distracting. We all handle situations different, it is a personal choice, as long as the relationship isn't hurting the worthiness of the future missionary, it's all good.

no not really i would think they shouldnt because most of the time there girlfriends of boyfriends will send them a dear Jhon letter and an invitation to her/his wedding :( sad but true

I only had ONE companion w/GF I never harassed about a dear john... I do not know how many others were dear johned but he and she married. he did not talk about her much but he clearly loved her in the moments he did... but they never distracted him. mathew and lilly sherwood... respectful nod :)
