  • Again, no it's not true that you need to be married by the age of 25 if you are a Mormon. Female Mormons go on their missions when they are 21 years old and they are on their mission for 2 years. So in order for her to come back after 2 years, meet someone and get married to them would only give them 2 years. Few people meet and marry within a 2 year span. (Men go on their missions when they are 19 yrs old)
  • That stems from a quote "from Brigham Young" that no one can find anywhere. Sometimes it's 25, sometimes 26, I've actually heard everything ranging from 21 to 30. Oh boy... my guess is that this quote was actually invented by parents who were worried they would never see grandchildren. Attributing made up quotes to Brigham Young is a common occurance, he was Prophet for so long and gave so many talks it would be hard for any one person to go through them all and make sure the quote never cropped up. Similarly some people are under the mistaken notion that you must get married a year after returning home from your mission. Ach! I've only got 3 more days for that one!
  • In 1963, BYU President Ernest L. Wilkinson said: "As to the single men, I need merely to repeat the admonition attributed to Brigham Young, "Every man not married and over twenty-five is a menace to the community." I asked Dr. Lyman Tyler yesterday if he would document this for me, but he said he had been trying to document it for years; he had given up, so you will have to accept it either on faith, or as apocryphal." Cannon, a church apostle, said in 1878: “I am firmly of the opinion that a large number of unmarried men, over the age of 24 years, is a dangerous element in any community.…”
