Ahh this is classic problem with the nintendo joystick. All you have to do is check your not touching the c stick or the main joystick when loading the games. So put the disc in and I would recommend you leave the controller alone until the title screen for the game you are playing comes up. Otherwise the controller is left in one position and will rapidly flick through choices. All games will automatically start up from when you put the disc in and press the ON button so don't worry about that. You can get more information from the inside front cover of the game manual booklets!

Yes, a very classic problem indeed, and one that has, strangely, carried over from the Nintendo 64 era. All Nintendo licensed Gamecube controllers have what is called a "Neutral Position". In this position, no action is taken in games (i.e. option scrolling, character movement, etc.) unless the user wills it. If a game is booted with either the Control or "C" sticks or the "L" or "R" shoulder buttons out of the neutral or normal position, the games will seemingly go haywire. To fix this problem, simply allow the sticks and the shoulder buttons to return to their normal positions (i.e. release them) and "then hold down the X, Y and START/PAUSE simultaneously for 3 seconds". This should fix the problem immediately. One can also reset or power down the system and the neutral position will be corrected. ~Primary Source: Various Nintendo Instruction Booklets~
