  • Depending on what hair type you are will determine how easy it will be to get rid of the infestation. Depending whether you hair is long and curly (being the worse), or short and straight. Either way expect to have you work cut out for you. If you have a problem with a reoccurrence, the problem more than likely has nothing to do with the effectiveness of the shampoo. Lice can live in places that are unexpected. They can live in the pillowcases and bedding as well as carpets. Anywhere there are dead skin cells. Once you have treated a person with the shampoo, it is very important to wash the bedding in which they sleep. Vacuum thoroughly the carpeting and washing any stuffed animals that are in the room. After shampooing the hair with the lice shampoo, it is important to use the fined-tooth comb. These combs are designed to crab onto the nit (the egg) and break it loose from the hair shaft. Keep in mind that the nits have a incubation period of 7-10 days. Any nits that are left in the hair may hatch, resulting in a re-infestation of these menacing mongrels. Therefore, a reapplication is necessary. There are over-the-counter products such as RID and NIX that are helpful. The combs are often included. The best way to treat is preventing it from happening. If you have a child with long hair. Keep it up in a ponytail off the shoulder and spray with a lot of hairspray (lice cannot eat thru hairspray).
  • My daughter has a problem with head lice often. I called the doctor for a prescription medicine called Quell but they told me to use mayonnaise! It worked better than any of the over the counter medicines I've tried. The doctor told me that the lice suffocate in the mayo and the oil from it makes combing the nits out easier . It is all natural so you are not putting pesticides in your child's hair and saves you alot of money!
  • I have four girls in school. They was being sent home everytime I sent them to school within a week after getting them back in. I have tried cutting their hair, shapoos, mayonaise, olive oil, and many others. The best thing that I have found that works is I bought a medal lice comb kit that has two combs in it one for the lice and one for the eggs. I go through their hair once a week no matter what. I do not use anything else now but the combs and I have found that they do not need them with me doing it on a regular basis. And I have not cut their hair in over a year. P.S. Do not mess up your childs hair with all that hairspray I found it did not work, it just made thier hair break more.
  • a few years ago both my daughters came home from school within a week of eachother with head lice.my youngest who had hair down to her lower back had it the worst and their hair is thick which doesnt help matters any.Well, we cut my daughters hair shoulder length because it took months,6 months approximately for us to get rid of them.We tried everything, nix and rid which were not in my book as helpful as they say,i found that pronto or lice free are the best.but i also did the vegetable oil in their hair and left it in while wrapping their hair in plastic all day and combing it out after about 8 hours.but most of all, wrap your childs mattress inplastic and close off the edges with duct tape or thick heavy duty packing tape so the air cant get it.they do live in the mattresses no matter what anybody says and leave the plastic on for good, its not going to hurt anything and run the sweeper a few times a day changing the bag each time and run blankets toys etc..in the dryer for atleast 40 mins.to kill them.
  • I was told to sit with mayonnaise on your head for something like 2 hrs. That works the best.
  • cheap conditioner works too. Just coat the hair and scalp completely and cover the hair with a showercap. Let it sit like that for about 45 minutes and then comb out, wiping the comb off on a paper towel as you go along. When you're done just rinse out the conditioner. Easy, cheap, good for your hair and it works!
  • My mom used to put baby oil in or hair then use plastic rap or a shower cap to cover it..(if child goes to school, do on friday night)
  • I was in the same situation awhile ago. My younger sister picked up head lice from school. I tried everything and it would not work. Finally a friend recommended to dye her hair. I dyed it her own color and it killed all the lice. I had her use more conditioner than she usually did to soften her hair. That helped loosen up the eggs. I then went through her hair twice, section by section, and carefully removed pretty much all the eggs with the metal comb. That was the end of them. I still had my sister use the over-the-counter lice shampoo for couple more times to make sure nothing remains. It was fast and easy. I would highly recommend it.
  • Our local elementary school had a lot of lice infestations until they sent home a paper which said to buy herbal essence shampoo and to rinse hair twice a week with cholesteral or queen helens kolesteral the herbal essence has laureth sulfate which critters dont like and the cholesteral odor they dont like so they arent as apt to take up residence after sending home this paper the number of kids with lice were reduced to one or two a year
  • Hand sanitizer, rub it in hair c, comb and in and it will all be gone in about a week without alot of work. It stuns the lice so u can comb them out and over a ouple of days desinagrates the eggs so u dont have to pick all of them out. Hope this helps, it did for my girls
  • use peroxide that works really well leave it in the hair for about 30 minutes it kills the eggs and the lice.
  • I was told that olive oil works as well as vinegar which works well during cleaning germs, couldn't hurt right?
  • I had this when I was nine, I washed my hair with a lice shampoo then combed it out right after with a special fine-toothed electric comb, it really does help.
  • Plain old cooking oil, all over the hair, comb out the nits with the nit comb then wrap the head up for the night. Wash it out the next day. They can breath in the oil and simply slide out.
  • here ya go: http://www.wikihow.com/Get-Rid-of-Lice
  • Rid X I believe is what we used if the warning came how from school about someone having lice. It is pretty easy unless the case is severe.
  • The last time my daughter got lice I bought a battery operated comb called Robi Comb. You just have to have the time to sit and slowly comb throught the hair but it kills the lice on the spot and combs them out. I had tried all kinds of shampoos too...and this is the last I had to buy in that department!
  • If you have a serious problem with reinfestation, I suggest using hairspray in your child's hair. Lice don't like hairspray...
  • My guess is that the Quell does work, but the rest of your things need to be treated. Any thing that touches the head bedding, stuffed animals, hats, coats, back of a couch and so forth. Those lice lay eggs and a lot of that medicated shampoos kill the lice, but the eggs that aren't treated in such things as the pillow will get back into the hair. I remember that it took quite a while to completely get rid of the lice when one of my kids had it. I had to repeat the process at least 3X in a month to make certain that she didn't have any. You may want to check if anyone else in the family, friends, school, daycare, work...has them. That's might be another reason why they keep coming back.
  • Vinegar. Pour it liberally all over the hair and put hair up in a towel. Leave in for about 30 minutes. In the meantime, boil water and make strong black tea. When it is cool, and the 30 mins has past, then wash the vinegar off your hair with the strong black tea. Comb eggs out with a lice comb.
  • mayo! it suffocates the lice and is also very good for your hair.
  • Qwell or any anti lice shampoo.
  • There's a brand-new, chemical-free therapy that involves a sort of hair dryer that kills lice and their eggs with heat. Lice are normally spread by schoolchildren. If your kids brought lice home, do not be embarrassed, call the school and say "There are lice in such and such a classroom." Otherwise, no matter what you do, your kids will keep bringing them home from other kids. Lice are not a sign of poor hygiene. I once inspected a schoolgirl for lice whose head was as clean as if she'd been bald, only one spec of dandruff on the whole thing. So don't be ashamed of it, that helps them spread.
  • I pLefer flied lice with chop suey.
  • Eviction notice? Seriously, get medicine from your family doctor for washing the hair and the sheets (actually works better than Rid or other OTCs). Use a fine-toothed comb to remove the critters from the hair after treatment.
  • use a lice pick
  • use a lice pick
  • I think that the old way to do it was cover your head in mayonaise. The acidity is supposed to kill them. Just make sure you wash your hair several times afterwards, cause nothing worse than a mayo-head.
  • How can you suffocate head lice when you have tried all the shampoos and treated the house as your told as use the lice comb is there anything anyone else know of to suffocate the I saw someone suggested Green tea
  • "lindane" can be found at farm supply stores.it is the main ingredient in quell or rid x.(though it is overly diluted)mix it 10:1,w/water and apply to your hair.leave it on about 10 min.then rinse and shampoo thoughly.
  • Rub the hair with olive oil, cover in a plastic cap, blow dry your hair, then wash out!!!
  • The shampoo is probably working just fine - but the kids are being re-infested by coming into contact with other items (like pillows, bedding, clothes, towels, toys, chairs, couches, carpets, carseats, etc.) Jackets and coats are notorious because it's an article of clothing that tends to not be laundered that often. Once lice are found you have to clean EVERYTHING in the house, not just the kids' hair! It's best to do it once a week for 2-3 consecutive weeks, that way you get anything you've missed. If it's a washable item, wash it with hot water and dry in the dryer on high for at least 20 minutes. If it's something you can't wash, then you need to seal it up in a plastic bag (airtight!) and leave it for at least 2 weeks to let all the bugs die. (I've heard that dry-cleaning also works - but haven't tried it.) You also need to wash the combs and brushes (and any other hair things - hair ties, scrunchies, whatever). You can wash them with hot soapy water, or soak them in alcohol. Don't forget to vacuum the carpets! Kids lay on floors all the time! It's not an easy process - but if you don't take care of everything, you'll find they just keep coming back.
  • Don't forget to treat the bed sheets, mattress and brushes.
  • Have you also cleaned the bedding or at least thrown it in the dryer for a little bit and vacuuming the floors and furniture?
  • My dads very unconventional and CHEAP...when I was little he used cockroach spray on our hair. I don't recommend it though....and I don't think it really helped
  • Two new techniques. #1, there's an electric hair drier that kills them with heat. #2, they are almost certainly getting re-infested at school. You'll have to alert the teacher and have him or her alert the parents of the whole classroom.
  • I also believe you are getting reinfested. You must treat bedding, stuffed animals ect. The best thing I've found is called Nix. You can buy a kit that has a spray for furnature, bedding and such. Treat the person, bedding and furnature then repeat in two weeks... Good Luck!
  • use a nit comb.
  • Shave your head like britiney spears, I think that is the real reason she shaved her hair off she got head lice from kfed and then lost it after she relized it wasn't just on her head it was everwhere on her body.
  • Clean up all personal use stuff such as pillow, bed, carpet, car etc Apply hair conditioning onto dry hair (cheap brand will do). Comb through evenly, tigh up conditioned hair and cover with a shower cap. Keep as it for about 24 hours, then rinse with warm water. Dry out your hair and repeat this process one more time. After second trial, use lice pick comb to comb over and over your hair to see if there is any "survival" lice. Pick out all eggs if possible no matter it's dead or not. To prevent head lice, always tigh up hair, plait is the best way. Avoid wearing other person's hat or helmet or stay head to head with other. Beside, mix 15ml of lavender oil, 15ml of eucaliptus oil with 250ml of water. Spray this mixture onto hair daily can eliminate catching head lice.
  • u just do it with purina shampoo
  • Tea tree shampoo oil regularly the lice hate it :o)
  • My mom used to use Mayo and then put a plastic sack over our hair for a while and smother them...Good luck
  • This is just a guess but I don't see why it wouldn't work. Anyone ever try pouring vodka on your head? lol
  • You can't just shampoo. You have to wash everything fabric and clean and treat the bed, all your sheets, blankets, send those clothes to the dry cleaner. Wash every hair brush and comb and do the whole family. And then don't get re-infested. It's really hard to do once it starts.
  • Buy a monkey. Make it feel at home, you know, treat it real nice. Then, when it wants to socially groom, stick little Johnny in front of the monkey. It will eat them all up in no time! OR you might try that shampoo... nah, go with the monkey!
  • I would suggest reporting it to your child's school. (Anonymously if you're worried about them targeting your kid for anything) I think if you complain enough or enough people do they will send letters home to parents letting the ones who don't know any better how to treat their kids. And I think if worse comes to worse they get the school nurse to start checking the kids and then call their parents if they are still finding kids with lice. If your child is a boy I would go for the quick fix and shave their head, or if they are a girl, cut their hair shorter to make the lice easier to comb out.
  • Apple cider vinegar gets rid of them ( I would do it for about 7 days) Leaving it on for 10 minutes or so, if you have lice now. Try to do it a couple times a day. Rinsing your hair with AVC after washing / conditioning, will not only keep them away, but makes your hair shiny too :)
  • petrolum jelly works to get then out but you have to leave it in for eight hours. The problem is that if they are getting them at school there is nothing that can be done until all the children get rid of them.
  • Tea tree oil is supposed to repel head lice.
  • Apple Cider Vinegar
  • For head lice problem wash your hair with vinegar. It will kill all the nits in two days. Apply coconut oil to your head after shampoo and condition. Add ten to fifteen drops of tea tree oil into shampoo bottle and use it daily. Or you could rub listerine mouth wash on your head. This will kill all the lice.

  • When I was a kid, mother use to put kerosene in my hair....arrrh, it did work though...
  • Liquid nitro?
  • Have you tried using a lice comb and running vinegar through their hair and actually combing the lice out? Also use dandruff shampoo and have it work up in a lather and let it sit- it will smother the lice.
  • apply onion juice to your scalp an hour before you shampoo your hair.repeat it every alternate day or twice a week
  • I used plastic brushes so I could microwave them for 2 minutes and their hair crunches also god yes it took 3 weeks it was hell now 6 months later here we are again
  • lots of conditioner and a comb...it will take a while and then do weekly checks shampoos are a waste of money
  • Shave your head, knit pick for a century, or get a special shampoo.
  • Change all pillowcases and sheets. Wash them. Wash your hair. Use a special lice shampoo. Comb your hair daily.
  • You must buy A100 in the drugstore. This will kill the lice and some nits(eggs)..You MUST come the hair every single night with fine tooth comb that comes with the shampoo. You might have to take the nits off hair shaft with fingernails. Just pull them down the hair shaft and squeeze them. They are oval, and stuck to the hair. In one week to ten days, if you still have an abundance of eggs, you may repeat shampoo. It is not recommended sooner as it is a pestiscide. Another thing you can do, after repeat shampoo, is use mayonaise on hair, cover completely, this will kill lice but not eggs...You can use the mayonaise whenever, but keep using fine comb until eggs are gone. All bed linen must be washed and dryed in dryer. All furniture vacuumed, stuffed toys bagged for 2 weeks. Also vacuum matress and turn it. Make sure child doesn't share hats, combs, etc..Aways have child, if girl, have her hair in ponytail for school. It's a lot of work, but it's not a shame to catch them, it's a shame to Keep them. Hope this helps:) I worked in a health office for years in our city school. Ive seen everything poured on a kids head, even kerosine. Only use what you will get from a druggest, nothing else, please.
  • Seek medical help; they can provide medicine and instructions. If you can't do that get some powdered sulfur or sevin dust at a home center, feed store or ... and powder your head good. Leave it on an hour or so then wash. Keep it out of your eyes.

It works great killing the lice and the nits, however, you still need to use one of the small nit combs to remove the dead nits that are still stuck to the hair strand http://www.grannymed.com/meds/lice.aspx
  • yeh, olive oil dus work, jus 2 confirm Jules2729`s answer.
  • Wash the hair in vinegar. It will kill and wash out a lot of the bugs, and it will kill most of the eggs but you will still have to pick them out. Vinegar also makes your hair look healthier.
  • Use Teatree oil based conditioner
  • Yep, you ought to try a product made specially for the purpose. They have come a long way since I was a kid and the stuff my mum had to use on us smelt like turps! You can also try coating hair in conditioner and combing with a fine tooth comb as an added measure.
  • My daughter has had a constant re-occurance of head lice over the last 3 years. She has extremely thick long hair and the only thing that has worked for us is a mayonnaise mix. Use regular mayo and add a little vinegar to it till it has the consistency of cake batter, then add 10-12 drops of 100% pure tea tree oil. Totally saturate the head with the mix and cover with a shower cap. Leave it on for 4-6 hours and wash out with Dawn dish liquid. Then use a thick conditioner on the hair but don't rinse it out, comb through it with a lice comb. After combing then rinse hair. It works! While the mix is on the head, take a spray bottle with water and put 20 drops of tea tree oil in it and spray down everything. Put all blankets, pillows, sheets everything that they have worn or been in contact with in the last 72 hours into the dryer on a high heat setting for at least 30 minutes. She is finally lice free and has been for 8 months now.
  • It can be a battle of up to 6 months unless you shave your head, which some guys do. Also to cut down the chances of reinfestation, besides all the cleaning listed by other posters. Is to (at least at night) wear a do-rag to keep the little buggers if they've survived all the shampooing and cleaning, off your head and also those that might be on your head will stay in the do-rag, so take it off carefully over a sink or trashcan and see if there are any. You can get a strong hairspray and work from the scalp to the roots and up the entire hair shaft making sure you get every strand and leave it on as long as you can, as it takes a long time to kill the nits and of course the eggs just hang in there regardless. Yep, a nit comb is a must and you must do it daily. Persistance is what gets rid of them. Comb and comb and comb. Nix is the best brand for treating them chemically, as it is thick and just all around seems to work the best of them all, with exceptions of doctor prescribed meds and shampoos and you'd like to avoid them if you can.
  • Don't tho' waste your money on the Robo-Comb. Does nothing that a cheap lice comb can do (and they come with the shampoos) and you'll save $30.00
  • I'm sure the shampoos will work if u buy the right one. (A shampoo for just that will do) You have to throw away your bed, bedsheets or wash the bedsheets in hot water with bleach. stay away from other ppls hairbrushes, hats and pillows. Most ppl who live with head lice also can have body lice. check with your doctor about that one. Keep others away from the person who has it, they can get it too. they feed off of the blood in your scalp and they can also lay eggs which is known as "nits". they like to cling on to dry clean hair. they do not like oily hair or oily scalp (something to do with the blood from our scalp). Oily hair they slide right off.
  • the medicated shampoo
  • There are a couple of shampoos (one of them is called "Rid") you can buy over the counter that come with very fined toothed combs to help get them out. You also have to wash all their bedding in hot water (and I added RID to the wash) and use a double rinse cycle.
  • u can kill the eggs using vinegar. just wash ur hair with it let the vinegar dry and the comb it out. it also helps if its a small lice attack. if THAT doesnt work THEN use the specail shampoo
  • after you get the rid shampoo and wash all their sheets, youd better spray the lice spray around the house too
  • the Rid shampoo in HOT HOT water and my mom took our sheets and clothes and put them in trash bags tied VERY tightly for 24 hours and then washed them in VERY HOT water. thats what we always did. hope this helps!!
  • There is an over the counter medicine that you can buy. Ask at the pharmacy. +5 good question.
  • My old relative used to pour gasoline on his hound dog to rid him of ticks.
  • Nix brand lice treatment medicated shampoo lice comb lice medicated hair spray
  • This can be done organically by introducing greenfly into the hair - they feed of nits
  • "Lindane" if you can find it at feed, horse and tack, and farm supply stores.Mix 2 Tsp in a quart of hot water and apply thoroughly. If Lindane cannot be found, use flea and tick shampoo for dogs. Its cheaper than Rid and works well, also wash all bed linens in hot water.
  • they don't tell you, but you need to leave the shampoo in longer...this came from a nurse hotline, my daughter keep getting them, and I had washed everything....and vaccumed every inch of the house...stuffed animals where bagged and put in storage....finally after leaving the shampoo on for a longer period they died...
  • Im not going to give away their info for free because its not right but I got the ebook and it solved all of our problems. I would at least check it out if I were you. The best head lice treatment for everyone! http://www.headlicefreenaturally.com head lice free naturally dot com
