I've recently acquired some software for putting digital photos onto a DVD so it can be played on a TV. I've burnt the project to a DVD RW but when I try to play it in my DVD players , incorrect disc comes up. Do I need to put it on a DVD +R or -R disc?

DVD+Rs aren’t technically DVDs; they’re a competing format (see http://www.dvdforum.org for details). Most new DVD players handle both formats, but if you want to be certain it will work in pretty much any DVD player, you should stick to genuine DVDs, and that means DVD-R.

(DVD±RW will also work in some DVD players, but certainly not all.)

It must be the opposite type to the one you used, mustn't it? I've just had a look at mine (Asda's best £69 DVD Recorder) and it says DVD +R.
