Even the most well maintain toe nails seem to be thicker then fingernails. I asked this question to see how many different types of answers I could get.

The questions I ask I did for a human behavior study which entails basic common knowledge.

Toe nails are mostly covered more so then hands and have less outside influences but this has very little to do with the thickness. Fungus can damage the nail true enough but will not make the nail itself thicker only add a thick layer of crude. The answer is UV light plays a big role in the thickness of nails. if you cover the fingernails more often your fingernails would soon become thicker.

Three major colleges done case studies with human nails and found those exposed to more UV light had thinner nails.

Many do not maintain their toe nails as much as their finger nails. I think this partly why they become thicker. but thats just a guess.

It's an age related thing. Both fingernails and toenails increase in thickness as we age.

That is a sign of a fungus infection. It will remain there until it is treated.

Sometimes toenails will thicken if fungus is acting
    on them.
