  • You most likely will not be able to obtain a W-2 from 20 years ago unless your employer has kept these records (you need to request it from the payroll department) but most employers only keep up to 10 years. You can try and obtain a complete copy of your tax return from the IRS but I believe they will only do so for the last six years (http://www.irs.gov/faqs/faq-kw31.html). Other options to show full-time employment are are the Social Security Administration who will provide a historical wage account (used to calculate social security benefits). You can order this at http://www.socialsecurity.gov/online/ssa-7004.html . You can also consider Human Resources records that show a history of employment. Some employment benefits can only received (such as health benefits depending on the plan) if you were a full-time employee.
