I don't know that there's anything authoritative on this topic. It's one of those questions that people speculate about endlessly.

I have to agree with Sean's answer. I don't think that there is anything authoritative on this subject. However, this is what we do know. Opposition is necessary to God's plan. This means that someone has to provide the opposition. My speculation is that, be cause we have the freedom to choose what we will do from the beginning, there is always some spirits that choose to rebel against God, thus providing the necessary opposition. I must emphasize that this is pure speculation on my part. I do not claim any authoritative sources for this.

I have read a TON of deep doctrine...authoritative. I have nothing speaking on this matter. However, this is MY OPINION...AGAIN MY OPINION, NOTHING FROM AUTHORITY. Since Heavenly Father was once mortal as well, that means that Gods have existed even before our Heavenly Father was exalted, so by simple physics with every positive you have a negative...meaning that there is much more evil out there that has been around much longer than Lucifer. When Heavenly Father was exalted, He knew of this and since He is all knowing He had to see that this evil would tempt Lucifer. Free Will has existed FOREVER, so Heavenly didn't stop Lucifer from being tempted. Read "Exploring Mormon Thought: The Attributes of God" by: Blake T. Ostler.

No. A big part of the pre-existance and this life is what we call 'free agency'. It existed then and it existed now. We know what God's plan was as scripture teaches this us however Lucifers rebelion, along with countless others was due to their free agency. Lucifer just presented a different plan and became the 'leader' of those that decided not to follow God's plan. The answer therefore is contained in the scriptures. The 'deeper doctrine' comes with Lucifer and his followers having power over mankind to 'tempt' them v's the possibility of other 'spirits' being able to influence us for good. But God gave us the Holy Ghost to be our guide so if other spirits are unable to influence us the Holy Ghost (one individual spirit)defiantly would be able to keep up with helping al those that are tempted by Satan and his followers (many spirits). But it gets even more complicated because one we choose to sin/follow satans whisperings the Spirit is withdrawn so who's there to help us when that happens. But I believe the answer to your question is a definate no.

2 Nephi 2:16 Wherefore, the Lord God gave unto man that he should act for himself. Wherefore, man could not act for himself save it should be that he was enticed by the one or the other. - That's the key verse, but the surrounding context is worth reading for greater understanding. - Noone had to rebel, but the plan of salvation could not go forward until someone would. Lucifer filled that need through his own free will, not because it was necessary.
