  • Because it really does move faster, just like all the other lines at the check-out in the supermarket.
  • Because you are driving too slowly. The gas pedal's the one on the right. Okay! (do you drive a Volvo?)
  • This a corollary to Murphy's Law ("If anything can go wrong ...") known as Ettore's Observation.
  • Because you're not in it.
  • It is important to remember with supermarket queues and multi lane highways/motorways that the probability of you being in the fastest lane is quite low.If there are three queues you only have a 33% chance of your one being the fastest, and in a supermarket with five queues its down to 20%. Even with only one other queue your odds are still only evens at being faster! Also on a highway many cars may opt for what seems to be the quickest lane. That act in itself clogs it up and slows it down, and means the original lane has less cars in it and so will move quicker as it is less congested. Best to stick in one lane. Many cars changing lanes creates delays for everyone.I have seen two lorries changing lane frequently to overtake one another create a 5kilometre tailback!!
  • Its a plot....everyone else in the world but you is in on it. We're doing it to drive you mad......we're all out to get you...we're all communicating with Elvis about you. YOU CANNOT ESCAPE YOU CANNOT HIDE YOU WILL NEVER GET IN THE FASTER LANE...oh, we do sometimes tease you, but the traffic slows...but its us against you---and don't forget about all your missing socks!!! MUAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
  • To supplement my previous answer If one lane does appear to be moving faster then the chances are that most of the people will perceive it to be moving faster and thus the majority of the drivers will go into it causing a "mass exodus" from the slow lane into what seems to be the faster lane. But then that act slows down what was looking like the fast lane and the original lane, now with far fewer cars in it speeds up !!
  • Cos it's "Sods law"
  • Because you're not in it! LOL
  • Murphy's Law. :)
  • well its because you aren't in it...that all changes once you move over.
