Even fenced in yards are no longer safe. A girl was playing in her front yard and someone opened the gate and took her! I sit on my front porch with my paper or laptop and I watch from a distance but I am there.

30..just kidding of course!! A child is not completely safe at any age. When they are old enough to understand the precautions and the reasons they are so important, they should be able to have a little more freedom. Depending on the age of the child and the neighborhood. But it always pays to not be too far away.

I know everyone is going to jump on me and downrate me, but I let my three year old go outside without direct supervision. I only let her go into the back yard, which has a high privacy fence, which is kept locked and is rather difficult to get over without a ladder. I also check on her every little while, but I don't necessarily go out with her. I think it's really excessive to never let a child be alone outside... my parents let me go out alone by about age 5 or so, and we were fine. If you live in a city, or a more dangerous neighborhood than I do, fine. But particularly if the child is with other children, there should merely be boundaries set, and enforced.

I distinctly remember taking my brother (2 1/2 years younger) and my sister (5 1/2 years younger) and walking four New York City blocks down to my friend's house. Mary was in a stroller, so I couldn't have been any older than seven. What the HELL was my mother THINKING letting three children outside ALONE in New York??!!? Sure, we're alive and unharmed... but my lord have mercy. Even if the children are very resourceful, and very intelligent, you should be able to see them at all times without much more than a craning of the neck, at least until they're 11 or 12.

No, Make sure the child has someone watching them at all times. There are some weird people out here in the world!!
