ACCOUNTANTS (PLEASE ANSWER): I’m good at math; however, my ability to compute numbers in my head is inadequate. I need a calculator or paper and pen to answer most math problems. Will this intellectual limitation make it hard for me to be successful?

  • I'm not an accountant but I am a business major and have taken several accounting classes. And I don't think it should be a problem. You use calculators and computers for most everything.

I don't think it'll be a problem, my Mum's an accountant and they just use formulas on a computer, which does it for you. In the past you'd have had a problem tho, I won't deny it!

My daughter has just got her CA. She completed the articleship in record time with a very prestigious company. She had already had her B.Sc.(Hons)in Finance and Computer Science. According to her, Accounting profession or vocation has changed and has little similarity with what it was 30 years ago. Today's Accountant is more like a Lawyer than 'Bean Counter'. Computers have changed the tedious task of gazing at numbers. So go for it. You will make a great accontant. Believe me.

I've been in accounting and auditing for more than 20 years and have the same difficulty calculating math results in my head. The prevalance of computers, ten-keys, calculators and the like means that should not hinder your ability to be successful as an accountant.

I only ask because I’m still trying to decide what I want to major in. I want to know what it takes to be a successful accountant before I declare a major.
