Syria is accused of supporting the military wing of Hezbollah (a political party in Lebanon) which is at war with Israel.

Syria has a history of harboring terrorists and funding Hezbollah as well as supporting the families of "suicide" bombers. Here is a fantastic article about Syria and terrorism highlighting the good and the bad and putting some of it in context. http://www.danielpipes.org/article/1064

I believe someone already said most of this, but they support terrorists, support Hezbollah, Keep meddling in Lebanon, and have shown to be no friend of the US. So from the US perspective, they are evil. Pretty simple equation really.

Since the ruling party in Syria is Ba'athist as was the regime of Saddam's which got over ridden by US invasion forces, there is a political affinity that they share with Iraq. Since they share the same border which is porous at best with deserts acting as the boundary, it is rather convenient to have Syria be an entry point for terrorists to infiltrate Iraq. Terrorists from all over the world can fly, sail or drive to Syria and make a relatively simple trip into Iraq and support the group of their choice. It also acts as a highway for arms and other munitions. I circled the porous border region for edification.
