There could be any number of reasons - she's jealous of a relationship you have with a guy at school, she didn't like your hair that day, she heard something about you and elaborated, she was bored...I wouldn't make too much of it. Be flattered that she's thinking about you, and don't pay it much attention. The less attention you give rumors, the less time they spend floating around. When people see you making a big deal, they assume there's some truth to what was said.

She is probably jealous.

I'm going to have to agree with she's jealous, but other reasons could be because she may just not like you and be trying to ruin your reputation. Personally I wouldn't let it get to you. Unless you act like it nobody will believe it anyways and it's not going to stick.

Why do girls do this? I wish I knew. Personally, I have this suspicion that it is a feeling of personal insecurity. The object of their venom is someone who displays characteristics they don't have...hence it looks like jealousy. How to get through it? Ignoring it goes so far. It is true that giving it more importance does often fuel it, but it is nevertheless hurtful to the max. I would have a talk to the school counsellor and get her to nip it in the bud before it gets out of control. Perhaps she could set up a mediation, which is always useful as 1) it shows the perp that other people in power know what she is up to (they like it all kept hush hush) 2)it gives you a witness In the meantime, behave with honour. Your reputation is the most important thing you have. If you are beyond reproach, then nothing can stick.
