  • I am sure there are people who believe this, but I do not. Despite dramatic differences in social structure, values, technology, geography, economy, etc., the belief in a supernatural Creator has existed in the majority of civilizations in the history of the world. I am convinced this is because intelligent people in all these different times, places, etc. considering the complexity of life, thought, language, etc. independently came to the same conclusion: that these must exist by design because it is just too hard to believe such incredibly complex and orderly systems just happened. If it is designed there must be a designer, and because of the complexity of the design, that creator must be God-like. Whether the belief in God is correct or not it is not necessarily a sign of weakness, but often a conclusion based on sound observation and deduction. Not all believe in God so it should be noted that the question is in error unless "we" means people who do believe in God.
  • Our ego is so huge that we .in general, that we can not consieve of a universe that is beyond our own knowledge. So we invent consepts like god. Man invented god . God did not invent man/woman. Comming form ape is not so bad. Science is complicated and needs a great deal of education to understand the world in all it comlexities or you can take the lazy person route go to chuch and listen to a few dogmatic one liners.
  • Well... this is going to be a bery controversial answer that I'm sure many people will disagree with. But what the heck... The idea of God and religion started as a belief that there was a purpose to life, but not the specific idea of a God (see the question in this section "Why do we believe in a God or gods?"). This has a clear evolutionary advantage- it stops people giving up on life and jumping of the next cliff! However, contexts change- With the development of speech, language, "governments" and institutions a selct few began to refine this innate belief in a "meaning of life." They gave birth to the ideas of God and religion, and used the new methods of communication at their disposal to spread the word. Soon people would cling to this idea, giving the inventors huge power and influence. To put it simply- We have people beliving in God because a few people were innately strong, desired power and saw an opportunity. We have so many beliving because everybody else is innately weak and will believe what they are told.
  • We are weak and that's why we need a saviour. We have a fallen nature that needs to depend on God to save us.
  • The fact that the God of the Bible exists is axiomatic, self-evident. Persons can directly perceive that God exists and sense his presence, unless they refuse to have God in their mind. Many persons find fulfilled prophecy and the power & design manifested in creation as compelling evidence. A consideration of what exists is compelling to many, who find that creation is a necessary explanation. They find in the study of what exists that the complexity and nature of the system demands a creator of vast intelligence and power. They consider that the system is most amazing in its detail and complexity. One starts with objects man-sized and works downward. The human body has parts, and the parts have parts, and the parts of the parts of the parts have parts. A study of anatomy and physiology awakens the understanding to just how amazing the body is. We soon realize that we cannot know all of anatomy and physiology, and we seem ever adding to our knowledge of the body. Then one continues on down to the microscopic: cells (which are much like bodies on their own), molecules, atoms, electrons, protons, neutrons. But wait, there is more: a whole array of little things down to quarks, with 6 different kinds of quarks (and who knows when the theories may change; as they always do, but not reducing the complexity of the whole). And one expects the quarks to have subparts, and then subparts of subparts. And who knows if a bottom will ever be found. Then one works up on the macroscopic: Man is part of societies and larger organizational parts. And the earth has its parts; but the earth is part of the solar system. Then up to galaxies and whatever higher organizations may exist. Creation is just mind-boggling. Yes, a study of this does lead many to a humble self-understanding of a greater being. The other major field of evidence is prophecy. Examples of prophecy include the great prophecies of the Lord Jesus found in Psalm 22 (where the crucifixion is detailed) and Isaiah 53 (start at the end of Isaiah 52 actually). But apart from a study of creation and fulfilled prophecy, even a child can directly sense God. For the existence of the God of the Bible is self-evident.
  • No. We don't all believe in God. Those who do believe in God, do so because of the fact of God, and because God provides the means of learning this fact to anyone willing to do so.
  • god and religion is an delusion for weak minds, i have written more about this http://www.fortheblankpage.com/2009/10/22/god-a-delusion-for-the-weak/

  • A whole lotta folks believe exactly that! ;-)
  • We don't all believe in a god. There are many reasons for belief in gods. One of them is that gods can provide a ready answer to any question. So, when the ancient Greeks saw lightning strike a tree, the easiest answer was "Goddidit!" Over time, religion became an organised thing, and it was obvious to the people who put themselves in charge that the source of their power was people's beliefs. The chief priest would lose everything if people stopped believing, so they devised various methods to keep belief intact. The most common is a reward/punishment system after this life, however they also depend heavily on brainwashing children since a very young age.
