Wish I had listened or at least followed my father's advice a little more..."when it comes down to it, it's normally who you know, not how much you know". I've found it to be incredibly true, often to my detriment.

I read a short bio of an Olympic champ whose mother advised her "Be grateful for television. It eliminates your competition." So when I entered high school, I cut television completely out of my life and by investing the time I saved in my education, everything I wanted to accomplish became possible. Not that I'm a champ--but if I'd watched TV like a normal kid I'd just be another frustrated failure.

My 3rd grade teacher told us to never be afraid to ask questions no matter how dumb the questions. Cause you learn by asking questions.

It's some advice that many people have to learn from personal experience: NEVER carry a cat by the tail.

This is among the best..I was 16 years old...my grandfather was dying and I visited him in the hospital..he told me that I was a diamond and I had to make sure that I always placed myself in the right setting. I have never forgotten that.

Never tell them what it was supposed to be, they will be pleased with what they get. Example: I decorated a cake for a friends wedding. I ran out of time and did not get the daisies put on with the other flowers. I saw that the daisies were missing. The bride loved the cake, because she only saw what was there, I didn't tell her what was missing, so she never missed it. This works with everything in life really. Don't put what is wrong or missing foward, he/she may never even see it.

Outside of common life advice, she told me to be disciplined and live within my means. Save money for my future. It's better to own what you have than to be indebted.

Do not say "that will never happen to me" because never is a long time and it can happen to you. everytime I have ever said that it HAS happened to me or to someone close to me ie) school shootings, I became homeless, I got pregnant out of wedlock, I had to go on welfare, I lost my job etc. so NEVER can always happen
