  • In traditional Mexican and Central American culture, babies and young children are often the victims of the Evil Eye. When a person stares at the individual, the eyes of the person can drain the power and/or soul from the individual. The individual or victim cries inconsolably without a cause, either having a fitful sleep, diarrhea, vomiting, and/or a fever. It is thought that powerful people can cause this draining of the soul intentionally or unintentionally. The traditional cure for the Evil Eye often involves a "curandero"(spanish) or "spiritual healer"(english), sweeping a raw chicken egg over the body of the victim while chanting or praying to absorb the power of the person with Evil Eye. The egg is then broken into a bowl or glass of water and examined by the curandero. The curandero looks for eyes on the surface of the water and counts how many there are. The number of eyes on the surface determines the number of people that passed Evil Eye. (And yes, more than one person can have the Evil Eye and pass it on). The inside of the eggshell is also examined; it is said that when a curandero looks into the eggshell against a lightbulb he or she can see the first letter(s) of the person(s) who passed the Evil Eye. The curandero then dispenses the water at his or her command. The ritual is over and once the Evil Eye has been released from the individual or victim, they often stop crying or fall asleep at once. The ritual may be witnessed if the curandero allows you to. While witnessing the ritual, there must be complete silence as the curandero must concentrate on the procedure. I speak from experience as I witnessed my nephew going thru the ritual. He was a victim of 12 people who had passed Evil Eye. And with no medications, prescriptions, or supplements, but spiritual care... he was cured.
  • The evil eye is the name for a sickness transmitted -- usually without intention -- by someone who is envious, jealous, or covetous. It is also called the invidious eye and the envious eye. In Hebrew it is ayin ha'ra (the evil eye), which in Yiddish is variously spelled ayin horoh, ayin hora, or ayen hara. In mainland Italian it is mal occhio (the bad eye) and in Spanish mal ojo or el ojo (the bad eye or just the eye). In Sicily it is jettatore (the projection [from the eye]) and in Farsi it is bla band (the eye of evil). The evil eye belief is that a person -- otherwise not malific in any way -- can harm you, your children, your livestock, or your fruit trees, by *looking at them* with envy and praising them. The word "evil" is unfortunate in this context because it implies that someone has "cursed" the victim, but such is not the case. A better understanding of the term "evil eye" is gained if you know that the old British and Scottish word for it is "overlooking," which implies merely that the gaze has remained too long upon the coveted object, person, or animal. In other words, the effect of the evil eye is misfortunate, but the person who harbours jealousy and gives the evil eye is not necessarily an evil person per se. Many books have been written about the evil eye. The classic 19th century text is "The Evil Eye: The Origins and Practices of Superstition" by Frederick Thomas Elworthy. http://www.luckymojo.com/evileye.html
  • I've seen the healing ritual, performed at home by the "housemaid" (a native from the Peruvian sierras) on a feverish cruing baby. I actually saw the "little eyes" when they poured the content of the egg of a glass of water, but I (being somewhat skeptic) attributed them to the heat the baby irradiated from the high fever (like passing an egg thru hot water). Well, all the answers are correct in regards to what is the "Evil Eye" or "Bad Eye", BUT they failed to mention HOW TO AVOID IT (if you believe in it). Well is as simple as tying a red string to the baby's wrist. I asked once how this is supposed to prevent the "Evil Eye" and the answer was that that red string distracts the "bad looker" and diminishes the "power of the stare". If you go to South America you'll see most babies have these red strings on their wrists. Let's wear one!! :)
  • Oculus Sinister (latin for left eye)
  • Here is an excerpt to answer that question: " Here is the very concept that has very rarely been truly understood. One can become effect of that condition and be the very one to relay it around himself. This condition is not within the vast majority of us by far. And it probably really affects only 20% of the total population but these 20% CAN and DO EFFECT the other 80%. The very important question is: where is this phenomena originally starting from? Truth is that even if all of us are spiritually good and equally so there is a little tiny bunch of us mentally VERY insane and thus very evil doing people. They as individuals are basically good but mentally are truly and effectively evil, destructive and psychotic. These are probably only 2 to 3% of the 20% I mentioned above."
